Meet the Speaker

Kayn Garcia | Animation Supervisor

It was almost inevitable that Kayn would forge a career in moving images, having grown up watching his father animate for Hanna-Barbera. Now with over two decades of experience spanning both 2D and 3D animation, he’s recently finished working on a dream project: the live-action adaptation of How To Train Your Dragon with Director, Dean DeBlois.

On graduating from the prestigious National Arts School in 1999, Kayn worked at Walt Disney Animation Studios then Animal Logic, contributing to 2D features and projects like The LEGO Movie. He began his Framestore career in 2014, and has since worked on globe-straddling projects that have benefited from his skill and flair. These include The Little Mermaid, Tom & Jerry: The Movie, Paddington 1 & 2, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 1 & Vol 2, Spider-Man: Far From Home and the Oscar-nominated Christopher Robin.

Dragons, Animation and How To Train Your Dragon

19:30 - 20:15 BST 10th September | Main Stage, Barbican

Kayn's passion lies in the intricate intersection of art and science that defines VFX and animation, where each film presents unique creative and technical challenges. How to Train Your Dragon proved to be a remarkable canvas for Kayn, who played a pivotal role in reimagining the dragons, with a particular focus on driving the development of Toothless.

He was deeply involved in every stage of the production, from the initial conceptualisation of character arcs and story development to the practical challenges of on-set execution. He spearheaded the creation of innovative tools to seamlessly integrate digital dragons with live-action, coordinating with puppeteers, motion-controlled robotics, and stunt teams to ensure the interaction between dragon and rider was as believable as it was thrilling!
