Beauty and the Beast: Art Department
Framestore was delighted to be chosen to collaborate with Disney on the live-action adaptation of the studio's ‘tale as old as time’, Beauty and the Beast, directed by Bill Condon.
Working closely with award-winning production designer Sarah Greenwood, Framestore's Art Department created initial concepts to help the filmmakers visualise its final look; including the Household Staff characters, environments and magical transformations.

Sarah Greenwood was brilliant to work with. We really felt like part of her team and everything was truly collaborative.

We had to build movement into a very rigid Baroque design. Animation was restricted to the physical properties of each character so as not to make them look cartoony. We used pivot points within the design instead of traditional squash & stretch.

The magical castle effect was a cool thing to get to work on; we based our designs on refracted light combined with the Aurora Borealis phenomenon.
