BAFTA Nominations 2026

Framestore celebrates two EE BAFTA Film Awards nominations, with F1 and How to Train Your Dragon recognised in the Special Visual Effects category.  Framestore’s awards momentum follows last week’s Academy Award nomination for F1 in the Best Visual Effects category.

Fiona Walkinshaw, CEO of Film & Episodic at Framestore, said:

“It’s hugely rewarding to collaborate with filmmakers who champion ambitious ideas and place real trust in their creative partners. These films represent our ability to sit at the heart of storytelling and the creative collaboration we foster with directors and each of the departments we work with. This collaboration is crucial for delivering stories that audiences can get truly swept up in.”

“We’re immensely proud of all the artists behind these films and to see their work recognised by BAFTA. Thank you to our partners who trusted us to push the boundaries of our craft to help bring each to life.”

Framestore Special Visual Effects Nominees: F1

For F1 The Movie, Framestore delivered cutting-edge visual effects that seamlessly blends real-world Formula 1 racing with high-octane cinematic storytelling. Production-side VFX Supervisor Ryan Tudhope, a longtime collaborator of director Joseph Kosinski following Top Gun: Maverick, adapted the team’s groundbreaking digital jet-replacement techniques to the world of elite motorsport.

A pivotal early proof-of-concept — replacing Lewis Hamilton’s car with a prototype APXGP vehicle during a lap at Silverstone while keeping Hamilton in-seat — proved instrumental in securing buy-in from senior F1 stakeholders and unlocking unprecedented access to live race environments. Embedded at races throughout the season, Framestore artists captured extensive reference photography under press access, effectively performing real-time photogrammetry of F1 cars. This allowed the team to build highly accurate digital doubles that could be seamlessly integrated into race footage while serving the evolving narrative.

Framestore Special Visual Effects Nominees: How to Train Your Dragon

Production VFX Supervisor: 5 x BAFTA Nominee Christian Mänz
VFX Supervisor: Francois Lambert (Montreal)

Before the film was greenlit, production side Supervisor Christian Mänz took on the task of exploring the design of Toothless for Director Dean DeBlois.  With the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless at the heart of the story, it was critical audiences would root for the pair and fall in love with Toothless.

The VFX was a huge undertaking, creating believable connections between performer and dragon relied on puppeteers who gave each actor a scene partner, as well as gimbals built by SFX and programmed by our animation team, giving each dragon flight characteristics that reflected their anatomy.

The isle of Berk was a character in and of itself, based on photogrammetry taken from helicopter flights around the Faro isles, seamlessly accommodating the training arena, built as a practical set on a large car park outside Belfast.
