VFX Animation: Closing the Gap Between Belief and Disbelief 

Head of Animation Kyle Dunlevy offers a broad overview of the visual effects pipeline, with a specialized focus on performance animation. Kyle will showcase behind-the-scenes material from How to Train Your Dragon, examining the anatomical research and nuance required to imbue dragons with soul and weight. He will further explore our contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, breaking down key action sequences from Spider-Man: No Way Home to reveal how technical precision and hand-keyed performance converge to create a seamless sense of reality.

 

 

Meet the Speaker

Kyle Dunlevy | Head of Animation

Having studied Fine Arts at Mount Allison University, Kyle's journey has taken him from prestigious roles at Lucasfilm, where he learned directly from George Lucas, to his current position as Head of Animation at Framestore’s Montreal studio.

Since joining Framestore in 2015, Kyle has led the animation department with a unique blend of visionary artistry and strategic leadership. His role encompasses not only creative oversight but also building and maintaining a team of top-tier animators, leads, and supervisors, ensuring that the Montreal studio remains at the cutting edge of animation.

Previously, Kyle’s work included serving as Lead Animator on Transformers: Age of Extinction at ILM and directing 23 episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which garnered two Emmy nominations. His diverse portfolio includes contributions to blockbuster titles such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Tomorrowland. Most recently, Kyle was animation supervisor on the epic Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II.
