ABOUT FRAMESTORE’S ART DEPARTMENT

Framestore’s in-house Art Department is a multidisciplinary team specialising in creature, character, and world design for film, episodic, advertising, video games, and theme park experiences.

With a unique ability to work across the entire production pipeline—or as a standalone creative partner—the team is trusted to develop bold visual ideas that elevate storytelling from the earliest pitch through to final delivery. Whether designing alien worlds, futuristic tech, or fantastical environments, the department’s work is grounded in both imagination and production-ready execution.

MEET THE SPEAKER

Jonathan Opgenhaffen | Art Director

Jonathan is a highly skilled and talented Art Director with over 15 years experience in both VFX and concept art for high-end Hollywood film. He has a wealth of knowledge which enables him to devise and concept a multitude of successful designs ranging from creature development through to environments.

At Framestore, he acted as Art Director for Framestore’s work on Spider-Man: Far From Home, where he was instrumental in devising the stand-out Illusion Battle sequence and clearly concepting the different stages for VFX. On the Oscar-nominated Midnight Sky, he brought the Aethership to life while imaging the dying earth concepts. Most recently, he helped architect Wonka’s ingenious chocolate factory and create the critters of Alien: Romulus.

The Beginning is Not the End

3:45 - 4:45pm BST 22nd August | Stage 1

In this session, Jonathan will explore how concept art acts as the visual blueprint for storytelling in film. Using exclusive behind-the-scenes examples, he’ll reveal how early design work shapes everything from a director’s vision and cinematography to visual effects and production design.
