Concept Arts: Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age
Framestore’s art department designs 2D/3D prehistoric creatures & action beats for Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age
At the start of the project the Art Department team initially created a variety of action beats, created by Art Director Jonathan Opgenhaffen, these were created to try and portray a sense of tension and survival there might have been for animals living in that time.
Alongside this, the team started the process of designing a look for animals that would be depicted in the series. Working closely with the VFX team they would start this process all based on known scientific evidence.
Art director Dan Baker mentions "Most interestingly, we were getting feedback from experts in the field, it was fascinating to hear such knowledgeable people discuss what these creatures would have looked like. As opposed to designing fantasy creatures, this project offered a new challenge of realising creatures that actually walked the earth thousands of years ago"
Also explained by Senior Concept artist Sam Rowan, "We were given outline model sheets from the Scientific consultant, along with a detailed document with clear references to skeletons, fossils and animals that live today to use as inspiration. We used these to create colour concepts for the VFX team to use as a blueprint for their final build."
On Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age, we had to find a way to depict these animals as realistically as possible so the viewer could truly believe this was a wildlife documentary shot in the past, and having the consultant advising us made it possible.
