Dan Bethell

For Dan Bethell, the world of visual effects has always been about one thing: the puzzle of how to best tell a story. With a career spanning over three decades, Dan joins Framestore’s Melbourne studio as a VFX Supervisor who is as technical as he is artistic. Originally starting in R&D at MPC, Dan spent years blending his passion for technical innovation with the art of filmmaking before moving to Australia in 2005. His journey reached a definitive turning point when he was thrown into the deep end as the 2nd Unit VFX Supervisor for Mad Max: Fury Road—an experience that included nine months in the Namibian desert and a VES Award for the team's groundbreaking work.

Dan’s approach is defined by the belief that VFX is at its best when it supports the heart of the film, whether that means building massive new worlds or simply enhancing practical photography to keep the audience immersed. Having collaborated with visionary directors like George Miller and Taika Waititi, Dan has developed a "large box of tricks" that allows him to be a pragmatic, collaborative, and creative partner from pre-production through to post. This versatility is perfectly captured by his dual VES recognition: winning for the high-octane "CG wizardry" of Mad Max, while later being nominated for the seamless, invisible supporting effects in Outlaw King.

Inspired since childhood by the transportive power of films like Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, Dan remains energised by the constant evolution of the craft. To him, new technology is simply a way to keep the audience more immersed in the narrative.
