io9 Storytelling Project

Framestore is taking part in an exciting new way of telling a story with Gawker sci-fi site io9. From August, io9 will publish futuristic concept art produced by our visual development team and allow their millions of readers to write flash fiction based on what they think is happening in those scenes.

The project is based on the 'exquisite corpse' form of storytelling, where a narrative is formed collectively, but in this case the best story will be voted for then used to influnce the next round of concept art - looping the plot between the writers and artists.

“Our partnership with io9 is a prime example of the power of using great content to create a dialogue with a highly loyal community,” said Sir William Sargent, founder and chief executive of Framestore. “The io9 community loves concept art, making it the perfect place to showcase the talented artists in Framestore’s visual development department, whose work is rarely revealed publicly."

"Our fantasy is that we would get a story or images that could be turned into a movie" said io9 editor-in-chief, Annalee Newitz, adding "concept art is part of the fabric of the io9 sci-fi community and this project will allow us to engage with them in a really new and unique way.”

The project has already become a success with the first writing request receiving an overwhelming response.
