Calvin Harris feat. Florence Welch 'Sweet Nothing'

Framestore has graded the promo for Sweet Nothing by Calvin Harris featuring Florence Welch, which was directed by Vincent Haycock at Some Such & Co and flicks between the red lights of a grotty gentlemen's club where we see Florence perform and some much darker fight scenes. Colourist Simon Bourne made sure the singer stood out against the vibrant colours of the club while retaining the bleak mood of the video.

"It was a real pleasure to work with director Vincent Haycock" said Simon, "knowing his work and his style which I admire. So when Tim Nash the MD of Some Such told me that Vincent would like to work with me I was thrilled. Having seen Vincent’s past work on the Calvin Harris promos, I knew exactly what he was after and had pretty much set the look throughout immediately."

"It had to be hard-hitting, gritty and vibrant. Having been shot on s16mm film with no lights at all, the grain and texture really came through as I set the moody grades. I had to make sure that Florence was paler though, isolating her skin and taking the reflective red and gold warmth away, which helped her stand out and not get lost."

"I thought of Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets when I graded this promo, with its bright colours which swamp everything, even though it's dark overall and has depth. The night scenes had no lights at all so that was a task to make sure I got all the information out while maintaining a naturally lit night street scene with ambient light."
