The latest spot for Starbucks sees us teaming up with Daniel Kleinman (Rattling Stick/Epoch Films) for a whimsical spot to welcome in the Holiday Season.
Daniel wanted to get as much in camera as possible so real snowflake kites were built and flown over New York. Our challenge was to duplicate the live action kites and build CG ones for the bigger shots.
The project was supervised by Murray Butler, who also lead the Flame team. "We had some mixed weather on the shoot so we had to do lots of sky replacement. We shot a lot of the kites on blue screen and used our Canon 7D to get alternative angles. These were invaluable as when we replaced skies we also had to replace the kites with better lit ones. We had some fun making the more abstract shots of just kites and blue sky - layering multiple kites spinning and adding camera moves. They turned out really well. The CGI kites in the wides looked incredible too."We had a pretty tight deadline so multiple suites were working around the clock while the CG kite system was set up by David Mellor in Houdini.
